What a great read. I had never heard of Chrostopher Lasch, either! How to cultivate that balance of healthy self-love and outwardly-directed interest is something I find myself thinking a lot about, too. (Especially as I watch my nieces grow up in this TikTok generation.) Much easier said than done.
Beautifully written. Never heard of Lasch. Love this though. “The therapeutic work of the half-century succeeding Freud had, to a surprising extent, cured the West of its repressions, but, within openness and sensuality, a different sort of demon had materialized —with no real identitarian roots and locked in the hall of mirrors of self-regard.”
Yep. Sounds like Gen X, captured nicely by Less than Zero, and then millennials, captured by the iPhone, etc.
